In principio erat nē/ĕ 1 : une analyse de la négation latine 'non-standard'

This paper focuses on both synchronic and diachronic issues related to the Latin negative particle *nē/ĕ. As proven by both comparative philology and the history of Latin, at its origin this particle worked as a standard negation, that is with the function of negation of an assertion or statement. In Classical Latin, however, it shifted to being a non-standard negation, conveying a volitive or intentional meaning, more generally typical of non-factual contexts. Meanwhile the original nē/ĕ was replaced by nōn < *nē/ĕ-oinom. Our analysis focuses on the use of Latin nē in independent clauses, giving new insights into both semantic and syntactic facts underlying the distribution of nē and nĕ, that point to conclusions quite different from the current views on this topic.
Ce travail est consacré aux enjeux diachroniques et synchroniques de la négation *nē/ĕ dans la langue latine. La grammaire comparée et les parcours évolutifs du latin nous assurent que cette négation était à l'origine la négation standard, c'est-à-dire la négation assertive. Mais dans la langue classique elle est devenue la négation non-standard, la négation volitive et, plus généralement, celle des contextes non factuels, alors que pour la négation assertive elle a été remplacée par nōn < *nē/ĕ-oinom. Notre analyse se concentre sur les emplois de la négation latine nē dans des propositions indépendantes, en focalisant certains phénomènes qui stimulent de nouvelles réflexions et qui incitent à modifier des idées reçues.
